I'd like to just use very simple 2d billboard trees and have them always face the camera. Is there a way to do this? Seems like a true 3d model always facing you would require a lot of constant retransformation of its vertices, however a true billboard (2d image rendered on screen) would not require such a transformation.
For reference, I'm working on redoing a project previously started in Torque. It has LOTS of trees in a typical scene. Here's a sample screenshot...
