For the 5th consecutive year, Delta3D has been awarded a tutorial slot at the industry's leading conference, the Interservice/Industry, Training, Simulation, and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) from Nov 30 to Dec 4 in Orlando, FL. For those of you lucky enough to attend this conference, we invite you to join us at the Delta3D Tutorial, 'Building Networked Games with Delta3D Simulation Core' at 8:15 AM, Nov 30, in Room 203.
Building Networked Games with Delta3D Simulation Core - IITSEC 2009. Thanks to all who attended and dropped by the Alion and NPS booths.
Why Should You Attend?
The Delta3D tutorial is a great opportunity to learn more about building your own application using Delta3D. This 90 minute presentation is intended for both newcomers and veterans. Newcomers will get an introduction to Delta3D including the features it provides, the licenses involved, the limitations, and a quick overview of some basic Delta3D building blocks. Veterans will get a detailed look at Delta3D networking including HLA vs Client/Server, Entity Publishing, Dead Reckoning, Network Damage, and Physics. And, of course, everyone gets to check out version 0.1 of Net Demo - a new, open-source, networked game built with Delta3D.
This event is also a great way to show some support for other developers in the Delta3D community. Thanks to the growth and support of the Delta3D community over the past 5 years, we have once again nabbed a choice slot in the largest Tutorial room. So, wake up early, grab some caffeine, and help us fill it up!
For more information on the conference, check out the I/ITSEC website.
This Year's Focus
This year's focus is Networking. We will discuss critical networking concepts that are useful for all M&S projects. We will show off new developments in Simulation Core. We will also show off an entirely new Delta3D-Extras library - the abstract physics layer (dtPhysics). To highlight the changes in Delta3D and Simulation Core, we will demonstrate a playful new networked game based on the concepts of Tower Defense.
When/Where?
The tutorial is entitled, 'Building Networked Games with Delta3D Simulation Core' and is at 8:15-9:45 AM, Monday, Nov 30th in room 203. Yes it's freakishly early, Monday morning!
Who Can Attend?
Unlike the paper presentations and other proceedings, this event is open to ANY type of conference registration, including exhibitor only badges.
What is Covered?
The tutorial covers all things Delta3D with a major focus on networking. Below is the high-level agenda for the tutorial:
- Part 1 - Overview of Delta3D
- Part 2 - Networking 101
- Part 3 - Net Demo
- Part 4 - Conclusion
Below is the full abstract for this year's tutorial:
This tutorial will present techniques for creating game-based trainers with Delta3D, with a special focus on networking. Delta3D is an open-source gaming engine built specifically to support the modeling and simulation community. This tutorial marks the fifth installment of this popular I/ITSEC tradition.
For this year, we developed a brand new networked vehicle combat game. We will use the game to demonstrate how to develop a Delta3D application with a special focus on networking and the Simulation Core. We will describe some of challenges associated with networked games including local vs remote ownership; data publication; dead reckoning; ground clamping; articulations; the entity damage model; and networking physics. For each challenge, we will present basic theory, some practical techniques, and working software. We will demonstrate new visual effects, particle systems, shaders, and user interface elements. We will also present an overview of Delta3D and an introduction to core building blocks such as the Game Manager, Actors, and Components.
The final executable and source code will be available to attendees to use as a baseline for their own projects. This tutorial is intended for simulation developers and their managers. To gain maximum benefit, the attendee should have a working knowledge of C++.
The Tutorial Presenters & Contributors
The following developers were responsible for the development and presentation of this year's tutorial and the Net Demo application. In addition, kudos go out to the entire Delta3D community and all the engineers who develop and maintain the best Open Source Game Engine available!
- Curtiss Murphy - Alion Science and Technology
- Perry McDowell - Naval Postgraduate School
- Chris Rodgers - Alion Science and Technology
- David Guthrie - Alion Science and Technology
- Brad Anderegg - Alion Science and Technology
The Full Presentation
Hey! Not so fast. The presentations done, but you gotta show up to see it! Heh. Just kidding. In actuality, the full tutorial will be right here Monday night (11/30), after the presentation. Feel free to come back then.
As promised, here is the tutorial: Building Networked Games with Delta3D Simulation Core - IITSEC 2009.
Other Delta3D Stuff at I/ITSEC
It's a huge conference and there are tons of things to see. If you are a Delta3D developer, you will want to attend the Delta3D community meeting on Weds, Dec 2, from 4 PM - 6 PM. This year, you can find Delta3D apps in a number of booths, including Alion (835) and NPS (2663). It's always fun to hear about other Delta3D projects, so stop by and chat.
