Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) used Delta3D to develop the prototype Nemesis game-based-learning application, with an objective to train operators in the decision-making and psycho-motor skills required for humanitarian demining. The project is based on the Nemesis Advanced Demining System sponsored by the US Army Humanitarian Demining Program.
About the Nemesis Game-Based-Learning Project
The Nemesis game-based-learning application is a prototype based on the Nemesis Advanced Demining System (Nemesis ADS), sponsored by the US Army Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate (NVESD) and being developed by Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA). The supporting program for the Nemesis ADS project is the US Army Humanitarian Demining Program. The Nemesis ADS integrates mine detection and neutralization technologies on a remotely-controlled robotic platform. The objective of the prototype is to train operators in the decision-making and psycho-motor skills required for humanitarian demining. The prototype has partial support for the embedded hardware components used with the actual system, and simulates the basic demining CONOPS defined by the Nemesis ADS program.
ARA built the demo using the Delta3D game engine, and while doing so implemented several enhancements to the core components of Delta3D. A major improvement to one of the 3D model import libraries enables artists to easily model generalized articulations that are fully operable in the game environment. The Nemesis neutralization vehicle uses a six degree-of-freedom articulating arm, which is simulated in the game using the improved importer and a custom actor library that exposes the articulations to scripts via the Python interface. The Nemesis game also makes heavy use of the graphical user interface and physics components of Delta3D, and uses programmable GPU shaders to display fine detail in the terrain.
